Among the most anticipated comeback in the summer, they’re one of the most popular group of kpop: 2NE1. Despite the postpone of their mini-album in mid-july, it gives us a nice gift from the Festival International of publicity in Cannes the 18th if July. We take the opportunity to offer a retrospective of their career.
2NE1 are famous artistes from YG Entertainment, and they’ve climbed high in the charts in just 3 years since their debut and are well-known globally. Their charisma and talents attracts famous international stars and famous producers like Will.I.Am. This is only the beginning, and these girls are determine to conquer the world.
Beginning of an explosive career
Girl group 2NE1 consists of CL (Leader), Bom, Minzy and Dara who started their career with BIGBANG, which is a remarkable boy band from the same record label. On March 2009, they appeared in “Lollipop” with Big Bang. This song is produced by G-Dragon, who is the leader of BIGBANG. The single topped online charts. Two months later, 2NE1’s 1st single, <FIRE>, was released. This song was a success immediately, and the group was presented as the most promising group. Their 1st mini album was released on July 2009, and more than 50,000 copies were sold just on the first day. After that, each of the members released their own solo singles which showed off their talents. In slightly more than a year since their debut, they’d received numerous awards like the Mnet Asian Music Awards and Melon Awards and are considered as one of the most popular kpop group.
The girl group came back in February 2010 with Try To follow me. This song was only intended for the publicity of the brand Samsung, but this song ranked #1 in Korean charts, which force YG to make a music video for the fans. In March, the girls received more than 4 awards in Cyworld Digital Music Award including Best Rookie Group and Top Selling Artist. In May, the group is spotted by the producer and singer Will.I.AM, which propose of producing their 1st international album. Till this date, the album is still in preparation and it will only be out at the end of 2012. The girls came back on stage on September 2010, where they release of their 1st album To Anyone.
There was a milestone in the group’s career in 2011. YG Entertainment decided to use a new strategy for their promotions. Before the release of their 2nd mini-album, which was at the end of July 2011, the group would promote their singles one by one. They started with Park Bom’s solo project “Don’t cry” on April 2011. Each of their single was promoted in a different way and this was unique in the kpop world. Lonely wasn’t promoted on broadcast programs, and Hate You Music Video was an animation cartoon directed by Mari Kim. This particular promotion for their album causes it to be their most successful album till this date. At the end of August 2011, the group was back on stage for their 1st solo concert NOLZA and it was a great success. 2NE1 were crowned winners for MTV Iggy “Best New Band” award on 9th November 2011.
Their careers in Japan
Being a group that’s not only popular but also capable of earning profits, 2NE1 was spotted by Avex Group, one of the largest record labels in Japan. After having an agreement with YG Entertainment, the group kicked off their japan debut in September 2011 by releasing their mini-album, NOLZA, which consists of songs from their second mini-album.
The group was featured in M-Flo’s single during January 2012, and they released their first full-length album Collection at the end of March 2012.The album includes Japanese remakes of their past popular Korean songs and their new single,Scream. Their Japanese album was a big success.
2NE1 in Cannes
This year, 2NE1 came as speaker for <Korean Wave>, where journalists and representatives from worldwide companies were present. They talked about their history in front of the large group of audience, and conference began with a series of videos that showed their dazzling debut in Korea and globally.
After being praised for having the courage of unshakable Koreans, 2NE1 was being interviewed on their career. 2NE1 was able to set the right atmosphere as always. Minzy showed her off her talent in dancing, and she explained how they’d worked hard in creating the choreography of their music video.
They also talked about their past.
CL- “One of our positive point is that we represent the diversity because we all have different backgrounds. Dara is a big star in the Philippines, Minzy always lived in Korea while Bom has a familly in America, and I’d lived in France for a long time.”
The most amazing surprise of the conference is without doubt the kindness and sweetness conveyed by the members. Are they pretty? Yes. They were beautiful. They were dressed up in the same way as they were in their music video. Did they dance and sing well? Of course. The performance that they offered to us was energetic!
But beyond all this there was a feeling of benevolence, and they talked about their fans with a lot of emotions, explaining how touched they are, no matter where they go. They were looking forward to meeting their fans, who were waiting at the entrance, at the end of the event. CL talked in perfect english and she mentioned that there is a need to see how important women are.
CL “A women will change the world one day”. After representing Kpop and their talk on their career, 2NE1 performed Can’t Nobody on stage.
3 days to gather the fans of 2NE1 for Cannes. We thought it was impossible at first, but we learnt that nothing is impossible for Blackjacks. For those who’re unaware, Blackjack is the name given to 2NE1 fans, and many came! Around 300 people gathered at the entrance of the festival and they waited for the whole day. Some fans came from places like Lyon, Paris and Bordeaux.
Fans arrived in groups or as individuals at 8 in the morning with their hands full of gifts and posters and even light sticks.
The objective of that day was simple, they were to start a flash mob using 2NE1 songs in their honor as they waited for their arrival to the festival.
There were CDs approved by YG Entertainment and they were distributed to fans. 2NE1 was supposed to appear on the balcony at the end of the day, but only Bom and Dara waved to the fans from their van.
THANKS TO ALL THE PARTNERS OF THIS EVENT, YG Entertainment, Korean Tourism Office, Cap Korea, K-FM and 2NE1 France
