As K-Pop begins to spread worldwide, the biggest question so far is, how will Americans perceive K-Pop.
It’s true that the American music industry is possibly the most intimidating and the most difficult to approach and get into. Despite the fact that 2NE1 is such a big girl group and one of the key bands that represent the new K-Pop wave, they are barely known to anyone inside the US.
However, it’s just the beginning of their journey into the US so it’s a little early to be despondent over the fact that their fame isn’t as big in the US.
Then how do Americans generally perceive K-POP?
It seems that 2NE1 succeeded in leaving an impression with their concert in Newark on Friday.
At 5PM EDT, in front of Prudential Center, there was a flashmob. An organization called 100%KG (K-Pop Generation) organized an event that involved 50 people, who proceeded to perfectly recreate 2NE1’s hit singles and their dances. All the by passers stopped to look at the scene and take pictures.
The fans were lined up hours before the concert, the line going up to about 200 meters around the stadium. The people walking by were curious and asked what kind of event was being held at the Prudential Center.
For the fans that were already completely crowding the streets around the venue, New Jersey Police blocked off a whole block of traffic so that the fans could move freely.
A New Jersey resident named Christian confessed to having been a fan of 2NE1 since three years ago. “2NE1’s music and characteristics cannot be found in anyone in the US.” He expressed sentiments that were saying that 2NE1 is something unique and something that the American market is lacking.
So would the residents in New Jersey be taking notice? We hope that the concert sparked the K-pop wave across America.
