2NE1 has earned the first No. 1 on Billboard’s World Digital Songs after a big sales week for their K-pop hit “I Am the Best.”
The booming dance-rap track is currently being used in Microsoft’s brilliant Surface Pro 3 ad and appears to be connecting with its U.S. audience. “I Am the Best” sold 6,000 copies last week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, marking the best sales week ever for any 2NE1 song.
The World Digital Songs chart has existed since Jan. 2010 and “I Am the Best” is the only non-PSY K-pop song to hit No. 1 on the chart.
2NE1 fans have been ecstatic over the reaction to the K-pop track, originally released in June 2011, on YouTube and radio too. The song’s official music video broke 100 million views over the weekend, making the quartet the second K-pop girl group to hit that mark after Girls’ Generation, who has done so three times before. As well, the zippy single appears to have earned a few spins on the playlist for Boston radio station 103.3 AMP.
To date, “I Am the Best” has not registered on any of Billboard’s streaming songs charts, but check back on Thursday to see if it does. As well, the song currently has no plays in the week ending Oct. 5 on any of the more than 1,500 stations Nielsen BDS monitors.
In March, 2NE1’s Crush album set the new record for highest-charting and best first-week sales for a K-pop album in America with 5,000 copies sold. The feat followed high-profile appearances on will.i.am’s #willpower album, released in April 2013, and performing “I Am the Best” on The Bachelor in January 2014.
